John Rhuel Laurente
Developer/Data Enthusiast/Mentor
About
I am a 4th-year Computer Science student at Visayas State University. My journey in tech is driven by a simple philosophy: build systems to solve complex problems, and build communities to help others thrive.
As a full-stack developer and project lead, I have developed scalable web and mobile solutions using Next.js, React, Firebase, and Supabase. I focus on creating technology with a lasting institutional footprint, such as spearheading the DormPay system and the USSC Connect.
My technical drive is matched by my dedication to academic excellence and student advocacy. I am a consistent President's Lister, a competitive programming and hackathon champion, and a proud DOST-JLSS scholar who had the honor of representing Region 8 at the national Scholars Research Camp.
Above all of these achievements, my greatest fulfillment was the privilege to inspire and mentor others — hearing how I helped mentees grow in the field of computing remains my highest reward.

Recommendations
View All"I am delighted to provide this recommendation for Rhuel, whom I had the pleasure of teaching during several of his CS major courses (OOP, DSA, etc.). Rhuel's journey is a testament to what dedication and a genuine passion for technology can achieve. While he is incredibly talented, his greatest strength is his unwavering perseverance. He not only maintained outstanding grades but also invested deeply in creating quality projects that had real impact. He built and deployed applications like the 'Eduvate' mentoring platform and the 'CORAL' intramurals system, showing an innate understanding of user needs. A natural leader and mentor, Rhuel voluntarily guided hundreds of his juniors, sharing his knowledge generously. He thrives in any setting—whether tackling problems independently or collaborating in a team. His keen intellect is matched by his ability to communicate complex ideas effectively, making him a standout in discussions and debates. I mentored Rhuel directly for a regional programming competition, where his team took first place, and have followed his success in numerous hackathons. He has a proven track record of delivering problem-solving solutions for real-world clients. Rhuel is, without a doubt, one of the most well-rounded and capable individuals I have taught. I can wholeheartedly vouch for his skills as a software developer, a mentor, and a future professional who will contribute greatly to any organization."
